Canal Ride 1 of 8

The Amsterdam canal system is the result of conscious city planning. In the early 17th century, when immigration was at a peak, a comprehensive plan was developed that was based on four concentric half-circles of canals with their ends emerging at the IJ bay. Known as the Grachtengordel, three of the canals were mostly for residential development: the Herengracht (Gentlemen's or more accurately Patricians' Canal), Keizersgracht (Emperor's Canal), and Prinsengracht (Prince's Canal). The fourth and outermost canal, the Singelgracht, served the purposes of defense and water management. Over the years, several canals have been filled in, becoming streets or squares, such as the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and the Spui.

For two years, SAVO, I lived 2 weeks of every month on a strret (Elandsgracht = Moose Canal) that used to be a canal, so I know whereof you speak. I love the canal system in Amsterdam. Even here in our much smaller city 36 miles south, we have a few canals that bring me as much joy. smile
A beautiful backlight shot. Thank for the informative words!
Nice shot Savo - the almost silhouette works well here.
Nice lighting and interesting information Savo.

Comfortable looking boats. Nice one Savo.
Amsterdam is a great city and the canals really adds to the atmosphere. Thank you for the interesting information and the nice shot (although Amsterdam Taxi Boats do not look to embrace green values... smile)
